How To Define Moble App Target Audience
Read Time: 2 minutes
It is vital to the success of your app to know your target audience, or, in other words, who your end-users will be. Understanding users' needs and expectations for their mobile experience will inform many of the decisions you make while designing your mobile app. Multiple factors such as age, gender, culture, socioeconomic status, education level, and language impact users' requirements and ultimately, a company's bottom line.
So before you wireframe, before you code, before you even choose a color palette for your app's design, figure out who your target audience is and obsess over making their experience with your mobile app flawless.
Build a Profile of the Target Audience for Your Mobile App
To build a profile of your mobile app's target audience, you'll need to identify your ideals users in a general sense and then determine their pain points. Will the app be for communication? Sales? Banking? Human resources? Will it serve an internal or external audience, or both?
What is the average person in the prospective user base like? Consider questions such as these:
- What is the average age of our mobile application's target audience? If users are generally older, they might want a simple, fast interface, and they might appreciate larger text for presbyopic eyes. If they are younger, they would likely respond more positively to an aesthetically pleasing design and a minimalistic, intuitive interface.
- Where do they live? Geography factors into language and cultural expectations. Not everyone speaks English, so you may need to account for translation, and people in different global regions are accustomed to different design aesthetics. For example, Asian apps tend to be more colorful than North American or European ones.
- How educated are they? More highly-educated users are more likely to be receptive to complex apps, while those with less education may need a more simplistic, user-friendly interface with fewer steps in the workflow.
- What is their general socioeconomic level? Socioeconomic level often correlates with education level, but it also affects a person's exposure to technology and digital tools earlier in life.
The more granular you can get with your analysis of the end-users, the more effective your app design is likely to be.
